Stepping into Karczma is like entering Eastern Europe through a Greenpoint time warp. Not only is the vibe extremely rustic and traditional, it is also old worldly, with wagon wheel chandeliers and gas lamp fixtures that light up a dining room featuring a prop water well. The seriously friendly waitresses are all costumed in billowy peasant dresses, typical of their homeland. While the setup is a little cutesy and kitsch, the food is legit. You will even find many a Polish family occupying the threadbare booths clutching tall glasses of exceptional Polish beer. Basically anything off the menu is awesome – but the standouts are the Polish potato pancakes, borscht, goulash and the pierogis. Although ask your waitress for specials and recommendations – they are super helpful.
